Overview
The Village of Winfield, incorporated in 1921, is located in west central DuPage County, which is ranked as one of the top growth areas in the Chicago metropolitan area, approximately 28 miles west of downtown Chicago. The Village's current population is 8,718, according to a special census conducted in 2000.

The governing body of the Village is composed of six (6) Village Trustees and a Village President elected at large for four (4) year terms which are staggered so that three (3) trustees are elected every two (2) years.

The Village owns and operates the water distribution system and is supplied water from Lake Michigan through the DuPage Water Commission. The Village is supplied sewage treatment service from the City of West Chicago, through an intergovernmental agreement. The sewage collection system is owned by the Village of Winfield. Natural gas is supplied by Northern Illinois Gas and electricity is provided by Commonwealth Edison.

Fire protection is provided by the Winfield Fire Protection District, which is a separate taxing body. The Fire Department operates out of two (2) fire stations; the Village has a Class 4 fire insurance rating. Along with the Fire Chief, the district has three (3) full-time lieutenants, three (3) full-time firefighters and thirty (30) paid-on-call firefighters. The district also contracts six (6) full-time paramedics.

The Winfield Police Department consists of twenty-two (22) sworn officers including the Chief of Police, one (1) Deputy Chief, four (4) Sergeants, and sixteen (16) Patrol Officers. The Police Department has been successful in keeping the crime rate the lowest in DuPage County for several years. <Top


Education
Elementary School Districts 33, 34, and 200 serve Village residents. West Chicago Elementary School District 33 operates six (6) facilities: Gary School; Lincoln School; Turner School; Indian Knoll School; Pioneer School; and West Chicago Junior High School, which serves 3,933 students (K-8) and is a feeder district to Community High School District 94. Community Unit School District 200 operates fourteen (14) elementary facilities, two (2) of which serve Winfield residents (K-5); Pleasant Hill School, which was annexed into the Village of Winfield in 2000 serves 689 students, and Carl Sandburg School has an enrollment of 429 students; four (4) Middle School facilities (6-8) who feed into Wheaton North High School, one of the two high schools in the Community Unit School District 200.

The well known Wheaton Central High School, which is part of Community Unit School District 200, was converted in 1992 and renamed Hubble Middle School in honor of the astronomer and Wheaton native Edwin Hubble. The Winfield Public School District 34 has two (2) buildings. Winfield Elementary School (pre-kindergarten - 4th) serves 252 students and Winfield Middle Schools (5th -8th) which serve 162 students.

The College of DuPage (COD), Community College District 502, is located just outside the Village of Glen Ellyn and has an enrollment of over 36,000 full and part-time students. College of DuPage is the largest community college in Illinois in terms of enrollment. Educational programs in over 80 areas of study include associate degrees, college transfer classes, occupational and vocational programs, continuing education, and special programs such as the Older Adult Institute and the Business and Professional Institute. The main campus covers 273 acres in Glen Ellyn. COD employs approximately 2,500 full and part-time employees. Village residents have access to other colleges and universities, both public and private, throughout the Chicago metropolitan area. <Top


Community Profile
The primary park district serving Village residents is the Winfield Park District. The District, a separate unit of government, serves an almost five square mile area in west central DuPage County. The major part of the District is located in the Village. The governing body of the District is composed of five (5) Commissioners elected for staggered four (4) year terms. A President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer are selected by the Commissioners from among the elected members of the Board.

Park facilities include fifteen park sites, totaling approximately 68 acres, which are owned and operated by the District. These sites provide numerous baseball fields, soccer fields, basketball and tennis courts, sand volleyball, a gazebo used for community events, various hiking areas, a picnic pavilion, and a picnic area on the DuPage River. The District maintains all fifteen (15) parks, the Charles R. Beggs Activity Center, a fishing pond, historical museum, veteran's memorial and a canoe launch.

The Winfield Public Library, located in the Village, has a seven-member board elected at large for three (3) year staggered terms. Currently the Library serves an estimated 8,000 patrons annually and inventories approximately 35,000 books and publications (including 124 periodicals, magazines and newspapers, references, tapes CD's and video's). The Library is asked 2,000 reference questions annually with approximately 73,000 books check out. Other facilities provided by the Library include story-time for preschoolers, adult reading group, a meeting room for public use, and also has access to an inter-library loan service from 100 libraries throughout the State of Illinois.

Four area hospitals serve Village residents: Central DuPage Hospital, which is located in the Village of Winfield, Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, Glen Oaks Hospital in Glendale Heights, Edward Hospital in Naperville, and Marianjoy Rehabilitation Center in Wheaton. <Top


Transportation
Commuter travel to and from Chicago's business district is available via the Metropolitan Rail "Metra's" Union Pacific West line. Interstate 55 is approximately 16 miles south of the Village and Interstate 90 is approximately 14 miles north. Also easily accessible to Village residents is the Interstate 290 Eisenhower Expressway, which merges in to the Interstate 88 East-West Tollway located 3 miles south of the Village.

Air transportation is available from O'Hare International Airport located approximately 21 miles northeast of the Village, Midway Airport approximately 20 miles south east, and DuPage County Airport approximately 5 miles northwest. <Top
